ANIMAL SCULTPURES

Lead Designer – Production Manager – Installation Coordinator

DESIGN PROCESS

St. Luke’s Hospital was building a new children’s clinic in downtown Boise and approached Trademark, my place of work.  I was given the lead designer, production manager, and instillation coordinator a series of projects for the new clinic.  I started by developing the identity of the projects.

The core repeated element would be the geometric animals that would be mirrored throughout the building.

After creating a series of approved sketches I modeled the animals in the computer.

The construction method of the animal sculptures was hypothetical, so I created a 1:1 paper model of the fox to start.  The paper model stood on it’s own.  The series of triangular facets gave the structure rigidity.  Once I knew that the method of production and labeling was feasible we cut the pieces out of metal and created the first aluminum sculpture.

FABRICATION AND INSTALLATION

After the fox was built the process became streamlined and we began to create the 5 animal sculptures that would surround the building.

For installation, we only had a two day permit in August of 2019 to shut down the roads and throw all of the animal sculptures and tree sculptures onto St. Lukes.  My team and I created a choreographed plan involving cranes, guides, snorkel lifts, tow trucks, road closures and iron workers. I oversaw and participated in the instillation, from bolting in the large elk, to guiding the bear’s foot pad in by hand as it was dropped on to the roof.

The project was a smashing success and one of the most fun projects that I have ever had the opportunity to work on.
