BIRD LIGHT SCULPTURE

Lead Designer – Production Manager – Installation Coordinator

DESIGN AND FABRICATION

The director of the local children’s hospital wanted to create an artistic light on the first floor of their Children’s Pavilion.  The light was supposed to flow from the parking garage entrance to the front desk. The theme of the floor is the sky, clouds and blue birds.  I wanted to create a smooth light that felt like wind as it wandered down the hall.

I started out by mapping and measuring all pieces in the ceiling roof area.  I developed a simple light-box system that used a white topper with LEDs that hung birds from it.  I printed several bird bodies which we cast into molds. After that we lasered out color changing acrylic wings for the birds.

Once installed, the lights were all programmed to fade between blue and white like clouds slowly passing over head.  The project is gorgeous and with a weight rating of 200 lbs per birds, kids can hang from the thing without fear of it breaking.
